
What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?
The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is definitely a pain in the heel or the bottom of the foot. Some other clues that you might be dealing with plantar fasciitis include:
- Pain, tenderness or stiffness in the bottom of the foot
- Pain that is most severe upon waking
- Pain after a long period of physical rest
- Pain that is worsened by flexing the foot and toes upward toward the shin
What causes plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis may be caused by any number of factors. They include:
- Overusing the feet with long periods of standing still
- Over-exercising or increasing activity too quickly
- Obesity
- Repetitive jumping
- Improper footwear
- Diseases like reactive arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis
Plantar Fasciitis is Extremely Common
Experts estimate that anywhere between four to seven percent of the population is dealing with heel pain at any time. Of these people, it’s estimated that about 80% have pain caused by plantar fascitis. In fact, about 10% of people will encounter this problem at some point.
